What is Brainspotting
Brainspotting is a cutting edge efficacy based technique to help release old patterns of thinking, release stored emotion in the body and help regulate the nervous system. Brainspotting is a powerful therapeutic technique developed in 2003 by David Grand, a seasoned EMDR therapist. This innovative method emerged during a session when Grand observed a client experiencing a profound emotional release by focusing her gaze on a specific point. This simple yet profound act allowed her to access emotions and trauma that had previously remained locked away.
Specific eye positions correlate with emotional experiences and can activate neural pathways related to trauma. According to the Brainspotting International Association, Brainspotting is:
Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of other challenging symptoms.

Brainspotting offers a distinct approach to healing compared to traditional talk therapy. While talk therapy primarily focuses on cognitive understanding and verbal processing of emotions and experiences, Brainspotting delves into the neurophysiological aspects of trauma and emotional distress. It identifies and addresses “Brainspots,” which are specific eye positions linked to areas in the brain where trauma is held. This method accesses deeper, non-verbal levels of the brain, going beyond the cognitive engagement emphasized in talk therapy.
Brainspotting doesn’t require you to relive past traumas. Instead, it allows you to process these experiences in a more intuitive and less distressing way. By focusing on a specific point, you can access deep-seated emotions and memories that may be blocked by emotional defenses.
Benefits of Brainspotting
Brainspotting can help you:
- Process trauma and emotional pain
- Release trapped memories
- Reduce anxiety and stress
- Improve self-awareness
- Increase emotional regulation
Unlike the linear and narrative-driven process of talk therapy, Brainspotting utilizes the body’s innate ability to heal. It taps into the body’s wisdom and allows for processing that may not be accessible through words alone. Brainspotting facilitates a deeper release of stored emotions and trauma by working directly with the nervous system, regulating it in a way that talk therapy might not. This makes Brainspotting particularly beneficial for individuals who feel “stuck” or unable to make progress through talk therapy alone.
In essence, talk therapy often involves intellectualizing and making sense of experiences through dialogue, while Brainspotting focuses on the body’s internal experience and utilizes a focused tracking of eye positions to directly access and process trauma. This allows Brainspotting to address trauma and emotional issues at a subcortical level, potentially leading to more profound and lasting healing than what is typically achieved through verbal processing alone.
