In a time of extreme uncertainty, we, as humans, are getting a crash course in surrendering. Each and every one of us have had to let go of expectations and plans in some way or other. We’ve had to loosen the reins on so much of what goes on in our everyday lives. For some of us, that might have even meant letting go of wearing pants on Zoom calls and surrendering to slippers being your sole choice of footwear. (Not that I’d know or anything!)

All joking aside, in Season 1, Episode 8 of the Inner Alchemy Podcast, we are joined by Crystal Bowlby to discover just how liberating it can be to choose surrender, and subsequently, to choose healing.

The Healing Power of Choosing to Let Go

Crystal Bowlby is a licensed clinical psychologist who has created a space for healing by prioritizing gratitude, curiosity, and surrender. Through her experiences, Crystal has witnessed the healing power of making surrender a choice rather than a last resort.

In a society where our achievements are held at a higher value than the wellbeing of our very selves, surrender tends to be left on the backburner. To surrender is to go against everything we’ve ever been taught in our culture: To seek more, to have more, to succeed more, to do more. How could we possibly surrender when plotting and planning is embedded in the very fiber of our beings?!

But, here’s the cool, not-so-secret-anymore part about surrender: It isn’t always about doing more. It’s about being with ourselves more.

In Crystal’s words: “Can we be with ourselves and our fear? That is the heart of surrender.”

I’ll be the first to admit that surrendering is scary. Placing our trust in others, in our bodies, and in the universe isn’t an easy feat.

When you choose to give some of that control back to the universe, you are consciously choosing to step into your power and authentic alignment. You are loosening your white-knuckled grip on the way you think things need to be and letting what will be… well, be. As the co-creator of your own life, you get to choose when to let go and succumb to the process.

Surrendering isn’t giving up; it’s giving in to what we can’t control. And it is one of the most courageous things you will ever do.

How You Can Invite Surrender Into Your Life

Surrender has immense healing power on the road to recovery. It allows you to be vulnerable while creating space for yourself to grow, learn, and be free of how you think things should be.

  1. Intentionally lean into your fear of surrender. Fear, however uncomfortable, can be a valuable tool in your healing journey. It is an emotion that guides us to the parts of our lives that might need surrender the most.
  1. Practice positive self-talk. Remind yourself that letting go isn’t giving up. The universe will lead you in the right direction. YOU will lead you in the right direction.
  1. Just be. I’ve said it many times, and I will say it many more because I need the reminder just as much as the next person: You are a human being, not a human doing. Give yourself permission to reclaim balance by being with yourself.
