Somatic Therapy

Somatic Therapy uses the body as its
starting point for healing.

Somatic therapy is considered “bottom up” therapy, in that we use the body to heal the mind. This is opposed to traditional “top down” therapy that uses talk therapy and the thinking brain to heal the body.

The word “somatic” is derived from the Greek word “soma” which means “living body.” It is a holistic form of therapy that is grounded in the relationship between the mind and the body. 

My particular lens of somatic work is influenced by my extensive training in both trauma and Polyvagal Theory. I am a Level Two Embodied Recovery (™) practitioner, which is a trauma informed, attachment based somatically integrative model of therapy.  I am also a L1 Transformative Touch (TT) therapist, and incorporate much of the knowledge gained in learning that somatic model into my work as a somatic therapist off the table.  

In somatic therapy, we focus primarily on the body by attuning to our sensations, felt senses, reflexive movements, and somatic patterns. My particular work focuses on early developmental movements (yield, push, reach, grasp, pull) and how they are connected to our attachment strategies and adaptive defense mechanisms. We explore these associations in the present moment to learn about the defensive strategies held in the body that still influence how we move through relationships and life itself.
